Presidential Election Flowchart for Liberals

I'm posting this flowchart just in case any of my liberal friends forget how it's done, although at this point you should know it by heart:

1. Forget about voting for any third parties, even if they're the only ones who embody your values. "Nader, dontcha know. Can't let the Republicans win."
2. Get excited about a Democratic candidate who seems to actually not be a sociopath.
3. Watch helplessly as Democratic Party hacks cheat your candidate out of the nomination.
4. Vote for the candidate foisted on you by those very same Party hacks.
5. Watch helplessly as that candidate loses the general election.
6. Search for a scapegoat: Greens, deplorables, Putin, Assange. Almost anyone (except you) will do.
7. Go to a demonstration.
8. Go home.

And that's all there is to it. (You're welcome.)

DEC Public Hearing on the Proposed Constitution Pipeline

East Middle School, Binghamton, NY
January 12, 2015

Summary of the Arguments Tendered in Favor of the Proposed Pipeline:

1. "I need a job."

While I sympathize with this, a transition to renewables would provide many times the number of good, permanent jobs as compared to this or any fossil fool pipeline. And when you get home from work, you'd still have a livable planet.

2. "There will be widespread benefits to the economy."

Again, nothing compared to the benefits of a transition to renewable energy, which will have the added benefit of avoiding the substantial downsides of fossil fuel extraction and use.

3. "The gas will be cheap."

We should not be providing economic incentives to waste energy and to produce more greenhouse gasses. The earth simply cannot afford this.

4. "In the old days we used to just toss oil and chemicals onto the ground and into the water. It didn't hurt us then and it won't hurt us now."

No clue as to the fact that cancer and other degenerative diseases are epidemic, and maybe this has something to do with it.

5. "We've been raping and pillaging the planet since ancient times. Why stop now?"

6. "The regulatory agencies will protect you."

Hahahahahahahahahahahaha.

From the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation:

Public Comments Sought On Draft State Permit Applications For Proposed Construction Of The Interstate Constitution Pipeline

Public Comments Will Be Accepted From Dec. 24, 2014 through Jan. 30, 2015

The public is invited to comment on permit applications the State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) received for the proposed, federally regulated Constitution Pipeline and an upgrade to the Iroquois Wright Compressor station in Schoharie County that is part of the project. The Constitution Pipeline is a proposed interstate natural gas pipeline that would traverse though Broome, Chenango, Delaware and Schoharie counties.

Because the proposed pipeline and compressor station upgrade are components of an Interstate Natural Gas Transmission project, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) was responsible for conducting an environmental review of the project and has the authority to approve the pipeline route. FERC issued a final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS) in October. Additional federal reviews and approvals for the project also are necessary. The FEIS can be viewed at: http://elibrary.FERC.gov/idmws/file_list.asp?accession_num=20141024-4001

DEC maintains the authority to review applications for specific permits and approvals. These include an Air Title V permit for the proposed compressor station upgrade, as well as a Water Quality Certification, a Protection of Waters permit, a Water Withdrawal permit and a Freshwater Wetlands permit for state-protected wetlands and adjacent areas for the pipeline installation.

Howie Hawkins for NY Governor - Press Conference

Hawkins for Governor

Howie Hawkins, the Green Party candidate for Governor, discusses the primary election and its impact on the campaign as well as the upcoming march for climate change in New York City, the status of gubernatorial debates, fracking, and other issues of concern to NY residents.

----------

Are you a registered Green who votes Democratic? If so, like many other Greens you probably do so because you see the Democratic candidate as the "lesser of two evils," and a vote for the Green candidate as a wasted vote.

Let's now take a view from the other end of the looking glass, so to speak, with the goal of understanding the mindset of The Powers That Be in the Democratic Party.

They know that you, an otherwise conscious and informed person, will continue to vote for the Democratic candidates no matter what, simply because they are not "the greater evil," the big bad Republican candidates. Thus do you surrender any and all political leverage you might otherwise have had. From their perspective, they OWN you. They don't have to respond to your concerns; they don't have to keep their promises; they can walk all over you and come election day you will still cast your vote for the Democratic candidates. This leaves them the option of moving ever further to the right in hopes of chipping away at the Republican Party's base. It also leaves them free to do the bidding of their masters...the corporations...who are their masters only because you have abdicated that role. If you look back over the last few decades you can clearly see this happening.

Your vote can be effective only if it contains an implicit threat that you might withhold it. Voluntarily surrendering that threat amounts to political suicide. In other words, your sordid little lesser of two evils game has shifted the political center of gravity to the extreme right, boxed you into a corner, and effectively disenfranchised you. Your vote counts for nothing, and is a mockery of your core values. Some political strategy...The only thing it's good for is a round of hearty laughs at cocktail parties in the Hamptons.

It's time to wake up and take back the reins of political power. Stop being the butt of jokes. Stop being a chump. Stop voting for evil, even a so-called lesser evil. Vote your conscience, vote your soul, get mad, and get even. BE the powers that be.

DRBC Public Hearing on Draft Natural Gas Regulations

Honesdale, PA; February 22, 2011

This was the first of two public hearings scheduled by the Delaware River Basin Commission for the same day in Honesdale, PA. The subject was the DRBC's proposed regulations relating to gas drilling. The two sides, for drilling and against, could agree on only one thing: they are both overwhelmingly opposed to the proposed regs.

As for myself, I'm with the "Drill, baby, drill" crowd, because of the obvious economic benefits:

1. Governments will be able to levy huge fines against the gas drilling companies for ignoring environmental regulations. Either that, or politicians will get rich taking bribes to NOT levy fines. Either way, it's more outside money coming into our community.

2. Construction companies will go on a hiring spree to repair the road damage caused by thousands of tanker trucks making thousands of trips at all hours of the day and night.

3. Doctors, hospitals, and pharmaceutical companies will reap a windfall treating chronic diseases caused by toxic chemicals released into the water, air and soil.

4. Realtors will have tens of thousands of new listings from residents eager to relocate out of the new industrial zone which was once their home sweet home. Of course, this may not actually result in any money changing hands, because who will want to move here? (Scratch that one.)

5. Lawyers will make millions filing lawsuits against everyone in sight.

6. Bottled water companies will see unprecedented demand from people seeking drinking water that can't be lit with a match.

7. Thousands of jobs will open up in law enforcement and social services agencies to deal with the increase in drug abuse and crime, along with related social problems.

8. Landlords will be able to double and triple rents as the working poor are priced out of the housing market to make room for gas drilling workers.

What are we waiting for? Drill, baby, drill!

PS: I had to edit out a few audience comments made while I was changing tapes in my video camera. Also, there was a PowerPoint presentation early on (which I edited out), and here is a link to the PDF.

When you hear the phrase "free trade," do you feel that George Orwell was uncannily prescient? What does the word "free" have to do with gargantuan state-subsidized corporations competing against peasant farmers, dispossessing them of their lands by the millions and forcing them into slums? And often the word "trade" doesn't really apply either, since the goods in question are merely being shipped from one corporate outpost to another, taking advantage of less than subsistence level wages, non-existent environmental regulations, and corrupt despots ever willing to sell their people out for a quick buck.

Another term one hears is "economic integration," which conjures up images of long-suffering third world masses steadily progressing toward some consumer nirvana. In reality, these people are being integrated into the global economy in a manner similar to the way formerly free Africans were integrated into American society prior to the Civil War. "Economic exploitation" seems a more descriptive term.

Meanwhile the proponents of "free trade" and the "invisible hand of the market" are now dipping their very visible hands into our pockets to the tune of $700 billion, a figure which will no doubt soon grow to several trillion dollars. This is greed and theft on an almost unimaginable scale. The U.S. is well on it's way to becoming just another corporate-fascist colony, where the only thing the public owns is the debt, and, to paraphrase Theodore Roszak, the trains run on time, especially those bound for the concentration camp.

This whole process can be viewed as a continuation of the enclosure movement which began centuries ago in England, whereby the commons were privatized and the people dispossessed (sound familiar?). But even the Tudor Kings might be taken aback to see what corporations in the 21st Century have enclosed (privatized), including for example, the genetic makeup of various species. In 1999, the Bolivian government even attempted to privatize rainwater, forbidding citizens from collecting it after selling the city of Cochabamba's water system to a foreign corporation. They eventually had to back down on that one after a public uprising.

Hmmm....."public uprising." Now there's a phrase I like!
