Landowner's Rights Forum: Marcellus Shale Gas Leasing

A public meeting held at Broome Community College on September 16, 2008.

About 400 community members turned out to hear local officials discuss the possible financial, environmental, legal, and aesthetic ramifications of gas leasing in the Marcellus Shale formation. The focus, to the chagrin of some attendees who felt we should first question the wisdom of signing at all, was on how to protect one's rights when entering into a gas leasing agreement.

As an aside, this forum was the first at which BCC ran a live webcast. Because of the large numbers in attendance at the gymnasium and also the importance of the event, I thought the webcast might draw an audience in the thousands, However, at the end of the night when I asked the technicians what the peak on-line audience had been, they said..."Forty." They also told me that because of a technical snafu they were unable to save the video and post it on-line as planned.

Speakers: Dennis McCabe, Donna Lupardo, Lindsay Wickham, Michael Danaher, Roberto Barbosa
